Imagine James Bond without the charm, heart, and sense of humor. All that’s left, if you think about it, is a sexist, narcissistic sociopath. And that’s “The November Man,” yet another professional misstep from former 007 Pierce Brosnan.
The title refers to Brosnan’s pitilessly cold Agent Devereaux, because whenever he comes through town, everything dies.
Using Bill Granger’s novel “There Are No Spies” as a template, director Roger Donaldson and his screenwriters, Michael Finch and Karl Gajdusek, foolishly emulate their hero’s chilly amorality by making the most soulless choices every chance they get.
They also embrace clichés as often as possible, so Devereaux is a happily retired CIA agent who gets drawn back into the game for one last job. His mentor (Bill Smitrovich) asks him to bring a Russian mole into the fold so she can share secrets about her boss, the vicious incoming President Federov (Lazar Ristovski).
But the assignment turns disastrous, and Devereaux goes rogue. Soon he winds up in Belgrade, facing off against his former protégé Agent Mason (a bland Luke Bracey). The two busily attempt to assassinate each other while racing to find the mysterious woman (Olga Kurylenko) who may hold the key to Federov’s evil plans.
The basic plot could have been entertaining, but the filmmakers don’t seem interested in anything beyond empty violence — particularly towards the female characters, who are treated with open contempt. Then again, no one comes off well. Director Donaldson treats even his main characters as paper dolls devoid of consistent personalities or features worthy of empathy.
Kurylenko (“Quantum of Solace”) remains appealing despite these obstacles, and Brosnan works impressively hard to revive so many shopworn spy conventions. But since he can’t hide his innate charm, he feels utterly ill-suited to a role that demands the aloof disconnect of, say, Liam Neeson.
Surely the ever-likable Brosnan can find better projects than the moneymakers he’s been taking on since ending his Bond run in 2002. Even in the lazy days of late August, this movie is hardly worth the price of popcorn.
