Shah Rukh Khan's "Happy New Year" (HNY) was expected to cross the ₹200 crore mark at the box office with net collections by the third weekend and it was also likely to beat Aamir Khan's "3 Idiots" domestic lifetime net collections. However, it failed to achieve both the targets.
"Happy New Year" helmed by Farah Khan earned ₹198.61 crore by the third weekend and it missed the double century benchmark by a small margin.
The collection of the musical heist drama featuring Deepika Padukone in the female lead role dropped drastically, as it entered the third week run. On the third Friday and Saturday, the film minted approximately ₹1.04 crore and ₹1.8 crore from Indian markets, according to Bollywood Hungama.
However, on third Sunday the film showed jump and minted around ₹2.33 crore, but it failed to cross the ₹200 crore mark.
The film was performing exceptionally well till its second week, but in the third week the collection dropped due to new releases and lesser screen count. "Happy New Year" was initially released in 5,000 screens in India and by third week the screen count came down to less than 1,000 screens.
The drastic fall in the screen count affected the box office earnings, especially in major circuits. Also, the film faced competition from Hollywood movie "Interstellar" and Bollywood movie "The Shaukeens" in India.
Meanwhile, at the worldwide front the film is doing exceptionally well. The gross income of the film has crossed ₹369 crore mark and now it is set to beat Hrithik Roshan's "Krrish 3" at the worldwide box office.
