For the second week in a row, "Gone Girl" has managed to stay on the number one position while "The Judge" had a depressing weekend in the box office.
"Gone Girl," starring Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike, is based on Gillian Flynn's best-selling novel of the same name, and in it's second week, the film hauled in $26.8 million. The opening week saw the movie raking in close to $38 million, according to The Guardian.
If the movie continues in the current trajectory, it could become director David Fincher's most successful movie to date, as industry talk indicates that "Gone Girl" could easily surpass the $127.5 million domestic gross of 2008's "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button."
However, "The Judge" opened fifth this weekend, and although it was expected to gross somewhere about 18 million, it could only haul $13.3 million in its first weekend.
Reviews for "The Judge" has also been largely negative, with Rotten Tomatoes, the review aggregator, giving the movie just 47% on the Tomatometer.
As per the site, the critics consensus is that the movie is best suited for the basic cable afternoon-viewing circuit, despite having heavyweight actors such as Robert Downey Jr and Robert Duvall.
"An overstuffed, overlong slog of a legal drama. Director David Dobkin coats every cliché with cheap theatrics. Go ahead, see The Judge just for Downey and Duvall. But to cite another recent dud, this is where I leave you," wrote Rolling Stone's Peter Travers.
Tom Long of the Detroit News concurs. "Let's just say any film that has a high school romance rekindled, hints of incest, cancer, professional baseball, mental disability and repeated vomiting has too much going on, especially when some things have no tie to the basic story," he wrote.
Other weekend releases included "Addicted" ($7.6 million), "Dracula Untold" ($23.5 million), "Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day" ($19.1 million), and "Meet the Mormons" ($3million.)
