Ajay Devgn's latest release "Singham Returns" has earned more than ₹120 crore in nine days at the Indian box office.
The Devgn starrer has surpassed the lifetime collections of Shah Rukh Khan's "Jab Tak Hai Jaan" [JTHJ] (₹120.85), Salman Khan's "Ready" (₹119.78) and Ranveer Singh's "Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela" (₹116.33 crore).
"Singham Returns", which minted over ₹112 crore in its first week, earned around ₹3 crore and ₹5 crore each on its second Friday (23 August) and second Saturday (24 August). The film's nine-day collections now amount to ₹120.98 crore, according to Bollywood Hungama.
The film has performed good business in its second weekend (till Saturday). The action-packed entertainer is expected to sustain its business on Sunday, and end the second weekend on a good note.
"Singham Returns" is Devgn's fifth film to enter the ₹100 crore club, after "Golmaal 3", "Singham", "Bol Bachchan" and "Son of Sardar". Interestingly, it is also the fifth film for both Kareena Kapoor Khan and director Rohit Shetty to cross the milestone ₹100 crore mark.
"Singham Returns" has performed much better than the prequel, which earned just around ₹100 crore at the box office. While "Singham" took 50 days to enter the elite club, "Singham Returns" achieved the feat in just five days.
The Devgn starrer is likely to continue its good run in its second week as new releases have failed to set the cash registers ringing.
However, with several films gearing up for release from the third week, "Singham Returns" will face tough competition at the box office. The film might lose more screens to accommodate new releases, which in turn could affect its business.
"Singham Returns" is currently the second highest grosser of 2014, after Salman Khan's "Kick". It has a long way to go to take top spot. With ₹230 crore lifetime collections (so far), "Kick" is dominating the list.
"Singham Returns" surpassed "Kick" first day collections by earning ₹32 crore. However, the film has lagged behind the Salman starrer in its opening weekend and first week collections. While "Singham Returns" earned ₹120 crore in nine days, "Kick" minted around ₹183 crore in the same period.
Even if "Singham Returns" manages to hold well at the box office, it might be difficult for the film to surpass "Kick" lifetime collections.
