When it bowed last year, it seemed inevitable that the 2014 Emmy Awards would be a victory lap for "Breaking Bad," but the AMC favorite — and star Bryan Cranston, with three best actor trophies to his name — faces stiff competition from critical favorite "True Detective," and star Matthew McConaughey is, after all, on a roll.
Netflix may have a big night. After winning only one major award at the 2013 Emmys — best direction for David Fincher for "House of Cards" — it has two strong contenders this year, "House of Cards" again, for best drama, best actor (Kevin Spacey), best actress (Robin Wright), best writing and best direction, and "Orange Is the New Black," with nods for best comedy, best actress (Taylor Schilling), best supporting actress (Kate Mulgrew), best writing and best direction. One of the big questions of the night — will "Orange" unseat "Modern Family," which is poised to tie with "Frasier" for the most consecutive best comedy wins?
HBO's "The Normal Heart," based on the Larry Kramer play about the early AIDS epidemic, is the heavy in the movie/miniseries category, with nine nominations (four in the best supporting actor category), but watch out for "Fargo," FX's sly rethinking of the Coen Brother's classic, particularly in the best actor category for Billy Bob Thornton, and Jessica Lange could win her second Emmy for "American Horror Story."
