Tapsee Pannu bagged Neeraj Pandey's 'Baby'

Posted by: Unknown Posted date: 12:53 / comment : 0 ,

New Delhi: Actress Taapsee Pannu's Urdu accent helped her in getting a role in the much-awaited action thriller 'Baby'.

The 27-year-old, who made her Bollywood debut with 'Chashme Baddoor', got excited when director Neeraj Pandey approached her for a role in his film 'Baby' because of her talent.

The 'Special 26' director was searching for an actress whose dialect in Urdu was crisp and clear and finally his search ended at Taapsee.

"All Neeraj asked me to do was to read a few lines which had quite a few Urdu words and phrases. Being a Punjabi girl, people expect me to have a north Indian influence in my speech, but to his surprise I managed decently well I guess," Taapsee said in a statement.

The espionage movie, which stars superstar Akshay Kumar in the lead role, Madhurima Tuli, Rana Daggubati, Danny Denzongpa and Anupam Kher, will hit the theatres Jan 23.

Box Office Collection: Akshay Kumar's 'The Shaukeens' Performs Better than 'Rang Rasiya' in Opening Weekend

Posted by: Unknown Posted date: 16:54 / comment : 0 , ,

"The Shaukeens" and "Rang Rasiya" opening weekend box office collections weren't as good as it was anticipated in India.

The Shaukeens

Lisa Haydon, Anupam Kher, Annu Kapoor and Piyush Mishra starrer "The Shaukeens" minted ₹18.52 crore in its opening weekend.

The film collected ₹5.12 crore on Friday, ₹6.35 crore on Saturday and ₹7.05 crore on Sunday to take its overall domestic total to ₹18.52 crore, according to Bollywood Hungama.

The opening weekend collection is far better than several other releases including "Mardaani", but trade experts anticipated that the film would get a very good start as it features Lisa in the female lead role and Akshay Kumar in guest appearance.

While its figures are not upto the mark, its business is still better than Ketan Mehta's "Rang Rasiya". The film started on an average note on day one, but it picked its pace on Saturday and showed more improvement on Sunday.

However, in international market the film failed to attract moviegoers to the theaters. The film didn't fetch a good start in international market also and in its opening weekend it minted only ₹29.42 lakh from overseas box office.

Rang Rasiya

Although Randeep Hooda and Nandana Sen starrer "Rang Rasiya" got rave reviews, the film failed to hold up at the box office.

In its opening weekend, it minted approximately ₹2.43 crore. "Rang Rasiya" started on a very slow note, but because of rave reviews the business improved during the weekend.

However, the overall business was not as good as it was expected. One of the reasons why the film failed to attract moviegoers is promotions. The film was not promoted on a larger level like other movies and also the screen count of the film was comparatively low.

The film has very bleak chances of showing any growth during the weekdays. But "The Shaukeens" may dominate the box office till the release of "Kill Dill" on 14 November.

Box Office Collection: 'The Shaukeens' Picks on Day 2, Set to Beat 'Mardaani 1st Weekend Figures

Posted by: Unknown Posted date: 10:03 / comment : 0 , ,

Comedy entertainer "The Shaukeens" has managed to show some growth on the second day of its release. The film minted over ₹6 crore on the second day and its total two-day collections stand at ₹11.47 crore, according to Bollywood Hungama.

"The Shaukeens," a remake of Basu Chatterjee's 1982 film of the same name, received average reviews from the critics. The film took below average openings by minting ₹5 crore on the opening day. The comedy drama maintained steady business and earned more than ₹6 crore on the second day. It remains to be seen as to how the film fares on Sunday. If "The Shaukeens" holds well on Sunday, the film is expected to mint over ₹16 crore in its opening weekend at the Indian box office. It is set to beat Rani Mukerjee's "Mardaani" opening weekend collections, which amounts to ₹14.46 crore.

The comedy entertainer has performed decent business in multiplexes, while its performance has been disappointing in mass belts, reported Koimoi.

The film is expected to face competition from Shah Rukh Khan's "Happy New Year, " which is still ruling the box office by maintaining steady business. The heist drama has minted over ₹196 crore and is all set to surpass the ₹200 crore mark by next week. The SRK starrer is expected to dominate the screens in its third week and pose strong competition to new releases like "The Shaukeens." It needs to be seen how the Abhishek Sharma directorial performs during its first week.

"The Shaukeens" stars Annu Kapoor, Anupam Kher and Piyush Mishra in lead roles. The comedy drama is about three old men who decide to have enjoyment in their lives. Akshay Kumar has reprised Mithun Chakraborty's character in the original 1982 film, while Lisa Haydon has played the female lead role, which was done by Rati Agnihotri.

Tigmanshu Dhulia has written the screenplay, while the film's music has been composed by Yo Yo Honey Singh, Hard Kaur, Vikram Nagi and Arko Mukherjee. The comedy drama is produced by Ashvin, VardeMurad Khetani, Akshay Kumar and Trilogic Digital Media Ltd.

Box Office Collection: Akshay's 'The Shaukeens' Earns ₹5 Crore; 'Rang Rasiya' Registers Poor Opening Day

Posted by: Unknown Posted date: 17:07 / comment : 0 , ,

Lisa Haydon and Akshay Kumar's "The Shaukeens" surprisingly opened to a good response at the box office as it collected around ₹5.12 crore on opening day. But on the other hand, Randeep Hooda and Nandana Sen's "Rang Rasiya" opened to a poor response.

The box office collection report of the both the films contradict the critics' reviews. While, "The Shaukeens" got mixed reviews, "Rang Rasiya" received positive reviews for the storyline.

However, business wise "The Shaukeens" has won the box office war.

 The Shaukeens

The film is a remake of the 1982 cult-classic comedy film of the same name. It tells the story of three old lecherous men – played by Annu Kapoor, Piyush Mishra and Anupam Kher – who want to have fun in life.

The film has received flak from critics' for objectifying women. Our reviewer too noted that the film was not at all a laugh riot and instead portrayed women in bad light.

"What could've have been a laugh riot was reduced to a boring journey of three men indulging in unabashed objectification of women," IBTimes India reviewer explained.

However, the film managed to garner audience attention, which is why it raked in over ₹5 crore, according to Bollywood Hungama. The film had average response in the morning shows and didn't show much growth in the evening and night shows.

The main competitor of "The Shaukeens" at the theater is "Happy New Year", but even the Shah Rukh Khan starrer has become two weeks old. So, there are fair chances for "The Shaukeens" to earn some decent moolah during the opening weekend at the box office.

Rang Rasiya

Randeep's film "Rang Rasiya" has received rave reviews, but the film failed to attract audience on the opening day. The drama film based on the life of painter Raja Ravi Varma has fetched in less than a crore from first Friday's theatrical run.

The business of the film is expected to rise since the word of mouth is really solid, but the box office collection completely relies on audience reaction.

'The Shaukeens' Movie Review: Failed Attempt at Remaking a Classic

Posted by: Unknown Posted date: 19:53 / comment : 0 , , ,

Take Basu Chatterjee's 1982 classic "Shaukeen", give a good stir, pour it on the silver screen for it to spill over and smother the audience with hardly-there humour.

Coming from the director of "Tere Bin Laden", a side-splitting satire on America's fight against terror and its consequences, "The Shaukeens" should've been the last thing to pique his interest.

Abhishek Sharma tells the story about three sex-starved middle-aged Delhi-based men -- Lali (Anupam Kher), KD (Annu Kapoor) and Pinky (Piyush Mishra) – who are desperately in need of some action. In their quest to find some 'love', they go too far (literally) and land themselves in Mauritius.

Instead of checking in at a hotel, KD rents a house owned by Ahana (Lisa Haydon) whose sloppy character sketch allows her to obsess over only three things – Akshay Kumar, fashion designing and Facebook likes. Still interested?

When she learns of Akshay's film being shot in Mauritius, Ahana says she would do anything to meet the star. The oldies pick up the wrong clue and hence take turns to arrange a meeting between the two. In a nutshell, this is what the film holds for you.

Kher, Kapoor and Mishra excel as the 'tharki buddhas' (pervert oldies). They make your guts wrench with their tasteless intentions, but at the same time touch your heart with the honest performances. Akshay Kumar's extended cameo somewhat keeps the story together but Haydon's free-spirited Ahana comes across as extremely scripted.

The screenplay could've have been taut, had Tigmanshu Dhulia not wandered too much into the lewd alleys owned by the film's central characters. And of all the cast and crew, looks like cinematographer Amalendu Chaudhary had the best time of his life shooting the film. Zooming in and out of Haydon's perfectly toned bikini-clad body must have been a visual treat.

As a director, Sharma definitely manages a blot on the resume with this one as it fails to do justice to his inimitable sense of humour. The comedy falls flat, and the audience is left with just another half-baked attempt at remaking a cult film. But full points to him for embedding a message, which says men shouldn't commodify women.

"Alcoholic" and "Manali Trance" might be chart toppers, but Yo Yo Honey Singh's music misses the mark somewhere. The title track is a bad-tasting mish-mash and is far from foot-tapping.

To cut the long story short, what could've have been a laugh riot was reduced to a boring journey of three men indulging in unabashed objectification of women.

RedGoli Rating: 2.25/5
