Shah Rukh Khan's recent release, "Happy New Year", which will complete three weeks on 13 November, is all set to break the life-time collection record of Aamir Khan's "3 Idiots".
The Rajkumar Hirani directorial, which was released in around 2,000 theatres in India, happens to be the first Bollywood film to cross the ₹200 crore mark at the domestic box office. It was the all-time-highest grosser, until Shah Rukh Khan's "Chennai Express" surpassed it in 2013.
On the other hand, having released in 5,000 screens in the domestic market, "Happy New Year" crossed the ₹150 crore mark at the Indian box office in just seven days.
With its first week collection reaching ₹157.57, the film was expected to rake in ₹42+ crore and surpass ₹200 crore mark in the second week. Trade analysts too had predicted that it would beat the record of "3 Idiots" in 14 days.
However, "Happy New Year" failed to live up to the expectations as it suffered severe setback with its business plunging by an all-time low of 80%.
One reason for its drop was that it gave a large number of screens to other releases. The film ended up collecting just ₹35.87 crore in the second week, taking its 14-day domestic total to ₹193.44 crore.
New Bollywood releases further reduced the number of screens of "Happy New Year" in its third week. The result was that the movie, which had collected ₹44 crore on its first Friday, had to struggle with ₹1 crore on the third. The film had a tough time collecting ₹6+ crore to enter the elite club.
Finally, in its third week, "Happy New Year" collected ₹7.23 crore, taking its 20-day domestic total to ₹200.67 crore. To beat the life-time record of "3 Idiots", the film just needs ₹2 crore, which is expected to be achieved in the fourth week.
