Veena Malik had quite the run as controversy’s favourite child, but the actress left it all behind when she wed businessman Asad Bashir Khan Khattak in December last year. For those who thought Pakistan-based Veena had quit the entertainment industry for good, here’s some news: Her Hindi film, Mumbai 125 Km, is set to release soon.
Settling down for an exclusive chat with us, Veena addressed the rumours that she had quit her career after getting married. “I never said I have quit the industry,” she says. “It’s just that I’m dedicating a little more time to my family life. I feel, in our industry, if a girl gets married, then it’s automatically considered that she is no longer part of the industry. That’s not the case with me. It’s just that I have become more selective and would like to take up more substantial and meaningful roles. I’m open to opportunities globally, as well as working in India and Pakistan too.”
While she may deny quitting the industry, Veena can’t deny that she’s changed her “look” post-wedding, trading in her bikinis for burqas.
“I don’t know if you can call it a new look,” she contests, however. “Maybe it’s new for the people who never saw this side of my personality, but it’s not new for me. Brought up in a traditional family, salwar-kameez and dupatta has always been the dress code.
“Whenever we are with the family, we have to be very particular and follow the dress code.”
Veena agrees that life has changed after she tied the knot. For one, she’s been jetting off to various destinations with her husband, and is enjoying this phase. “Every phase of your life has its own charm. I started my career when I was in Class Eight so I have always been busy. I missed spending time with friends and having fun with my family, unlike other teenagers. In fact, I couldn’t even attend some very important family events because of my work. But after working for a long time, I realised that my family also deserves my time and I have to just take a deep breath and reorganise my life. So nowadays, I keep busy with my family, decorating my home, spending time with my parents, siblings, husband and in-laws. Life is so much fun, and beautiful,” Veena says.
About her husband, she waxes eloquent: “The relationship between husband and wife is probably the most beautiful one. Every single moment, (Asad) does something that’s adorable, like surprising me with gifts and beautiful gestures… we talk for hours… He sings for me, makes me laugh. And it’s mutual.”
This is certainly a side of Veena audiences haven’t seen it’s her bold, brash onscreen avatar that viewers are more familiar with. Veena says that’s because people know only one part of her. “I think I’m still a mystery to the audiences as they have not seen much of my work. And at every stage of one’s life, you evolve as a person and as an artist too. I’m sure in the future, my fans will see a completely new dimension of me and love it too!”
So will Veena be visiting India to promote her film? “I’m looking forward to it, but I’m in the US at the moment and quite occupied with family life. I will see how I fit in the film’s promotion schedule.”
