Omung Kumar's directorial debut film "Mary Kom" based on the story of boxer Mangte C. Mary Kom has received mixed reviews from critics.

Priyanka Chopra, who plays the role of the boxer in the film, has managed to impress critics with her stunning performance. Even Darshan Kumar, who plays the role of Kom's husband, has done a commendable job in the film, according to critics.

Koel Purie of India Today said: "A biopic film needs to be well crafted to bring alive a living legend, the story, no matter how true, needs to be splendidly told, poetic licences need to be cautiously taken and the acting needs to evoke at least the spirit of the person we know and love. Mary Kom the film, may not have got all of this right all of the time - there are issues with age, accent, emotion and pace - but the film has heart. What it lacks in craft it makes up for in soul."

Subhash K. Jha of IANS said: "Hats off to debutant director Omung Kumar for bringing us one of the most inspiring biopics to have ever reached the silver screen.

"Priyanka's powerhouse performance knocks the breath out of our solar plexus. She yet again proves herself the best actress of her generation."

Deepanjana Pal of Firstpost said: "There's a tip that we're frequently given before going to watch a Bollywood movie: "leave your brain at home" to enjoy the experience. Omung Kumar's Mary Kom is one of those titles.

"If there hadn't been a real-life inspiration to Mary Kom, there would be little reason to complain about Omung Kumar's film. Sure, the screenplay jumps awkwardly, the editing is sloppy and the acting ranges from bland to ghastly, but there are moments in Mary Kom that bring tears to your eyes and it's no hardship to root for this woman."

Srishti Dixit of BollywoodLife.com said: "Priyanka is a revelation, she never fails to surprise! Just when you thought she can't push the boundaries after Barfi!, came Mary Kom to prove you wrong! PC doesn't just take on the role of Mary she becomes Mary.

"While the pace of the plot is satisfactory it runs the risk of being sketchy at times.

"Box your way to the nearest theatre if you have to because PC has won our gold medal for this one!"

Prathamesh Jadhav of India.com said: "Mary Kom may not be the most brilliantly designed movie but it has its heart at the right place. It may not entertain you in the most exciting or thrilling way, but the earnest performances from the actors and the sincerity shown by director Omang Kumar with his craft of direction and storytelling definitely calls for a deserving round of applause."

Bollywood Hungama reported: "MARY KOM is definitely worth a watch. The icing on the cake is that the film has been made tax free, something that should help the film in pulling the audiences to the theatres, besides the word of mouth. Go for it."
