Priyanka Chopra's "Mary Kom," which took a decent opening on the first day, picked up and witnessed some growth on the second day.
"Mary Kom" minted ₹8.02 crore on the opening day and on the second day of its release, the film minted ₹9.2 crore. Its two-day collections stand at ₹17.22 crore, according to Bollywood Hungama.
The biographical sports drama has surpassed the opening weekend collections of Rani Mukerji's "Mardaani," which collected ₹14.46 crore.
"Mary Kom", directed by debutant Omung Kumar, is about a common girl from Manipur who pursues her passion for boxing against all odds and becomes a world boxing champion.
The sports drama is based on the life of Olympic champion Mary Kom. Unfortunately, the biographical film has not released in Manipur, the home state of Mary Kom. Since 2000, Hindi films have been banned from being screened in the state.
Kom is disappointed that the film based on her life has not made it to theatres in Manipur. "I feel very sad that people everywhere are seeing the film made on my life but not the people in Manipur. It is risky to release it here so I think it is better not to do it. But me and the Government tried their best to get it released," Kom told the Press Trust of India.
Meanwhile, "Mary Kom" has received tax exemption in several states including Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Assam and Jharkhand in order to increase its viewership.
The film, which hit the screens on 5 September, opened to decent reviews from the critics. Priyanka's performance has won accolades from many fans.
Positive word of mouth is expected to boost the film's business in the coming days. If the Priyanka starrer manages to hold well on Sunday, the film is likely to end the opening weekend on a decent note. It is expected to beat the first week collections of "Emraan Hashmi's "Raja Natwarlal," which has earned ₹25.88 crore, soon.
With last week's releases having failed to perform well, "Mary Kom" is expected to continue its good run in the coming days until Friday when new films including Bipasha Basu's "Creature 3D" and Arjun Kapoor-Deepika Padukone's "Finding Fanny" hit the screens.
