'Pisasu' Tamil Movie Review: Audience Live Response

Mysskin is back with "Pisasu". The director's last movie "Onayum Aatukuttiyum" did not live up to the audience's expectations and so he wants to return to his good form with the latest flick.

"Pisasu" is a horror-thriller produced by ace filmmaker Bala. This combination has made people wait for its release. The movie features Naga, Prayaga Martin, Harish Uthaman, Radharavi, Kalyani Natarajan and Kani Kusruti. The flick has Arrol Corelli's music and Ravi Roy's cinematography. Gopinath is the editor of the movie.

The Tamil movie explores different aspects of the supernatural world. The director wishes to give spine-chilling moments to the audience in this less-than-two-hour film. Prayaga will be seen in the role of a ghost in "Pisasu".

"Pisasu" has been released on Friday (19 December). Here, we bring you the live response for the film from the audience.

Super star Rajinikanth once again ready to bang the collection rating in Indian film industry. Rajinikanth Lingaa movie release date on Dec 12th 2014, and the coincidence is Rajinikanth Birth dayalso the same day, coming to the Lingaa movie Review it has of late started while ago in Mysore. In this movie Rajinikanth plays a dual role and Sonakshi sinha and Anushka shetty are slated as the leading female role. Lingaa enjoyed highest expectation for any Tamil cinema before its release in spite of being bombarded with many legal issues. The film, over the last few months not only increased the anticipation level among Indian movie goers but had also managed to induce excitement amid foreigner's. So what does the most anticipated movie has to offer?

Well, to begin with there couldn't have been a better treat for all Rajinikanth fans on his birthday for the movie focuses entirely on the Superstar. Though the movie carries a predictable plot, KS Ravikumar's brilliant story telling skills induces a fresh dimension to the movie.

Story:

Raja Lingeshwaran(Rajinikanth) is a rightful heir to a famous dynasty that once ruled most parts of Southern India. Though he belongs to the royal family, Raja Lingeshwaran graduates as a civil engineer who also goes on to become Madurai's collector as per his father's wish. When Britishers takeover after abolishing the traditional Indian ruling system, drought wrecks havoc in a small village to which Raja Lingeshwaran is transferred as its new collector. 

Raja Lingeshwaran takes up the initiative and requests the Britishers to build a much-needed dam that would serve well for the people. But his idea is opposed citing a political reason and hence he leads from the front and inspires each and every villager to take up the responsibility to build a dam for themselves without seeking help from the foreigners. He also takes care of the monetary issue by taking up the expenses to build the dam. 

In spite of facing many deadly hurdles from people with evil intentions, the dam is built successfully. However, after many years(present day) the hard work of an entire village is put under danger by a corrupt MP played by Jagapati Babu, the main antagonist 

An old man from the village, played by legendary director-actor K Vishwanath gets to know that the only way to save the village is by opening lord Shiva's temple situated near the dam after almost 75 years which was also built by Raja Lingeshwaran. But since the villagers believe only a heir of Raja Lingeshwaran should open the temple, Rajinikanth(Lingaa), who is the grandson of Raja Lingeshwaran, comes back to the village to open the temple. Why the temple has to be opened? What danger has befallen on the village forms the rest of the story.

Performances:

Rajinikanth shines throughout the movie and carries the entire film on his shoulders. His performance as a responsible king and modern person is appreciable. Anushka has done a wonderful job in her role as reporter and the other leading lady Sonakshi impresses the audience with her expressions. Santhanam is good as always with his witty one liners and his combination with Rajinikanth has worked wonders.

Technicalities:

Randy's camerawork is brilliant and has managed to capture the essence of Karnataka's scenic beauty. Apart from showcasing Rajinikanth no more than a 40 year old, his collaboration with the colorist has worked well as there is seemingly significant difference in visuals between two different time periods. Sabu Cyril, as a production designer has done a fantastic job in presenting visually appealing sets. Though the set designed for 'En Mannava' song reminds us of Sivaji's 'Vaaji Vaaji', he manages to score lots of points in other aspects. AR Rahman's background score is brilliant as usual. Special mention goes to the make-up artistes and designer Nikhaar Dhawan who has tailored Rajinikanth's costumes in a simple yet stylish manner.

Analysis:

KS Ravikumar choose a 'Pre-Independence & Post-Independence' subject inspired from the life of John Pennycuick for his reunion with Rajinkanth after 15 Years of All-Time Blockbuster 'Narasimha'.

AR Rahman's songs were passable but background score is exceptional. Ratnavelu's cinematography is flawless. Sabu Cyril's art direction is fabulous. Dialogues are excellent. Fights could have been better. Editing is not upto the mark. Production Values are fantabulous.

The plot resembles some of Rajini's past movies and it's predictable to say the least. A lot more intensity and gripping narration could have created wonders though. Of course, Rajini entertains with his trademark styles throughout the course of the movie. 'Lingaa' pleases all those die-hard Rajinikanth Fans to some extent but don't expect it to be anywhere close to 'Narasimha'!

Box Office: 'Lingaa' is certain to take an earth-shattering opening as advance booking for the Weekend has been fantastic. In all possibility, It is expected to be biggest opener ever for a South Indian Film. But, Will that be enough to rewrite 'Robo' records?

Watch Lingaa for its technical brilliance and KS Ravikumar's intriguing narration. Rajini's One Man Show!

'Ra' Review Round Up: A Decent Effort by Youngsters to Bring Out A Tamil Horror Film

Tamil horror movie "Ra" has got mixed response from critics.

The Prabhu Yuvaraj-directed film starring Aditi Chengappa, Ashraf Baby, Yuvina, Geetha Babu, Jayanth, JP Jay, Lawrence Ramu, Ravi Prakasham and Redhika was released on 5 December.

The story of the film revolves around Ajay (played by Ashraf) and Ranya (played by Aditi) who elope from their homes and get married with the help of friends. However, under mysterious circumstances, Ranya is found dead on the morning after their marriage. Heartbroken, Ajay seeks the help of a psychic to help him get in touch with Ranya's ghost. 

But soon, frightening things begin to happen at their house, typical of horror films. The door refusing to open, chair rising in the air, his bedsheet is pulled away while he is sleeping, and so on. However, the sub-plots do not join to the main plot, say critics. "It's a bit like a dull student copying parts of the same answer from several classmates," says one critic.

Most of them felt the film has an interesting first half, which fails to carry on in the second half. They opined that the effort by the film's makers to make it different did not reflect in the narration as well as in the script that is filled with clichés of a horror movie.

On the upside, the film scores in cinematography, colouring and editing, as also the background music by Raj Aryan, according to other critics.

"In their apparent eagerness to step away from the usual, the makers end up providing unsatisfactory answers. There's the omniscient 'scientist' (usually a priest in horror films), acting as a deus ex machina, and there's the mandatory twist at the end... but all of this only complicates things further. There's no one main plot that unifies all the sub-plots."

"Finally, it looks like horror films in Tamil are coming of age. Ra is essentially a haunted house thriller but the writers Ashraf and Prabu Yuvaraj (the hero and the director of the film respectively) introduce an element of fantasy that gives it a different colour. And, their treatment isn't kitschy in the least bit and the director whips up a genuine sense of dread (Hollywood horror films 'Insidious', 'Stir Of Echoes' and 'Dead Silenceare' listed in the titles under filmography.")

"Technically 'Ra' stands out and it won't be an exaggeration to say that the cinematography and music in Ra is in par with some of the so called big budget films which are made in Tamil cinema. Saravanan's angle selection and colour tone are fabulous while debutant Raj Aryan has given a stunning background score and hummable tunes just like a veteran composer's work."

"Performances are pretty decent. Hero Ashraf although appears a little 'un'heroic in initial shots, we get used to him slowly and he is fairly convincing in most frames. Aditi Chengappa looks ravishing and fresh but sadly she does not have much screen time for the audience to revel in her beauty. Friend Lawrence Ramu who is also doubling up as the lyricist of the film has done his part well."

Siddharth-Prithviraj's "Kaaviya Thalaivan" (aka "Kaaviyathalaivan") has received positive reviews from the critics.

Directed by Vasanthabalan, "Kaaviya Thalaivan" is a historical drama with Siddharth and Prithviraj playing the lead roles. The film also has Nassar, Vedhika, Anaika and Thambi Ramaiah as part of the film's cast. The multi-starrer has hit the screens on Friday nearly after two years. There are huge expectations, thanks to the impressive trailer and the songs, composed by AR Rahman, which has turned out to be big hits.

The historic fiction drama is reportedly based on the lives of 20th century drama artistes in pre-independent era. The film revolves around two artistes - Kaliyappa Bhaagavathar (Siddharth) and Gomathi Nayagam Pillai (Prithviraj). It deals with various emotions including romance, ego, jealous and deception. 

"Kaaviya Thalaivan" has received good reviews from the critics, but whether the film will manage to bring in crowds to theatres is something one needs to wait and watch.

Critics have appreciated the performances of Siddharth, Vedhika, Nassar and Prithviraj. Rahman's music is one of the major highlights of the films. On the flip side, the film is let down by weak script, said the critics. However, they appreciated director Vasanthabalan's efforts in making a historic fiction drama.

"Vasanthabalan's phenomenal amount of homework and research done in scripting and etching the backdrop is evident in every single frame. Thankfully, Vasanthabalan has also kept himself in check by not getting over-melodramatic as seen in his previous movies. The story and dialogues by Jeyamohan are sharp, efficient and focused," stated MovieCrow.

"'Kaaviya Thalaivan' really is a meticulously laid out drama, polished in the story and perfected in each frame, for a classic entertainer for all, and especially for those who have a taste for retro," according to Indiaglitz.

"The real man behind this kaaviyam is Vasanthabalan, perfect screenplay, sid and prithvi characterizations is brilliant. He has handled a thin subject with real care from start to end. "Siddharth has given an awe inducing performance, flooring us with his charm and varied range of emotions. Prithviraj plays the grey character with conviction and provides the much needed conflict in the film. Vedhicka proves that her performance in Paradesi was no fluke," according to Subramanian Harikumar of Bollywoodlife.

"Vasantha Balan's "Kaaviya Thalaivan" is a lovely throwback to the 1930s drama era but is somewhat let down by a tepid writing. The film is visually ambitious and highly sincere with gorgeous production values. It's is cocktail of rivalry, friendship, betrayal, ego and love built on that cornerstone of an actor's dream , appreciation. "Kaaviya Thalaivan" is definitely earnest in parts, but to call the end result an absolute triumph would be an overstatement," stated Surendhar MK of OnlyKollywood.

"#KaaviyaThalaivan a tale of friendship versus ego sincerely captured against the backdrop of a drama troupe. But writing is a big letdown," stated Haricharan Pudipeddi, an entertainment journalist at IANS. "#KaaviyaThalaivan works only in parts like Rahman's music. But Kudos to Vasantabalan's sincere effort to try something offbeat," he said.

'Kaaviya Thalaivan' Movie Review: 5 Reasons Why Siddharth-Prithviraj Starrer Film is Special

One of the much-anticipated films of the year, "Kaaviya Thalaivan", will hit the theatres on 28 November. The film, directed by Vasanthabalan, will be released simultaneously in Tamil, Malayalam and Telugu.

Genre and Plot

"Kaaviya Thalaivan" is a Tamil musical, set in Madurai during the 1920s and 30s. The story revolves around old drama schools and the life of stage artistes and singers of the period.

Not often do Tamil filmbuffs get to watch their favourite actors together in a big-budget film. The film is expected to reflect the customs, culture and lifestyle that existed in the pre-independent Madurai. The trailer of the film has also assured that it is going to be a story of love, friendship, hatred and jealousy, all outlined on the backdrop of freedom struggle.

The thread is said to be inspired by the love story of KP Sundarambal and S Kitappa. Sundarambal is often referred to as the "Queen of Indian Stage" and was also a political activist.

Direction by Vasanthabalan

"Kaaviya Thalaivan" is helmed by one of the most prolific film-makers, Vasanthabalan. The director has proved his capability of bringing out classic films through his earlier movies – "Veyil', "Angaadi Theru" and "Aravan" – which pioneered the new wave movement in Tamil cinema.

"Kaaviya Thalaivan" is considered to be a product of extensive research by the director as he has spent nearly 12 months doing just researches on veteran theatre artistes and their whereabouts from existing theatre clubs that existed in Madurai, Dindigul, Karur and Pudukottai.

The film is expected to be yet another classic, which will reflect the craftsmanship of the director.

Music by AR Rahman

AR Rahman's music for the film is the most-discussed aspect of the film. The two-and-a-half hour film has got 14 songs — including seven short ones of about two-three minutes each.

The film apparently demanded him to research much on theatre music of 18th century Madurai. The music, which is a mix of folk culture and typical Rahman style, was earlier released and had garnered highly positive reviews.

Casting and Performance

Another important aspect of the film would be the cast, which is the amalgamation of the best talents. The film stars Siddharth, Prithviraj, Vedhika, Anaika Soti, Nasser, Thambi Ramaiah, Ponvannan, Babu Anton, Singampuli and Mansoor Ali Khan in pivotal roles. The astounding chemistry between these actors is said to be the highlight of the movie.

The film is touted to have best of performance by the actors and since the story of the film is about the theatre artistes, it will see each actor in an average of 25 looks. Siddharth, who plays the lead in the film, will be spotted in 40 looks.

After a long gap, Prithviraj will be spotted in a character with negative shade and Vedhika will don the role of Sundarambal onscreen.

Technical Aspects

Other than Vasantha Balan and AR Rahman, "Kaaviya Thalaivaan" is well supported by other National Award winners including lyricist Pa Vijay, actor Thambi Ramaiah, make-up artist Pattanam Rasheed, editor Praveen and costume designer Selvam.

The cinematography of the film is done Nirav Shah, who has done cinematography of films like "Saivam", "Thalaivaa", "Thaandavam", "Madrasapattinam", "Thaandavam", "Billa' and "Dhoom".

The film also has the last song penned by the late Kavignar Vaali, "Krishna Vijayam" while the late Raghuram Master has done the choreography for two of the songs in the movie

"Lal Bahadhur And Shasthri" directed by debutant Rejishh Midhila has opened to positive reviews from critics. The film stars Jayasurya, Nedumudi Venu and Aju Varghese in the lead roles.

The story of the movie revolves around three strangers, Lal (Jayasurya) – a young man from Kuttanadu, who is in search of a job, Bahadhur (Nedumudi Venu) – a 70-year-old man with ayoung heart and Shasthri (Aju Varghese) – an innocent farmer. They meet each other on a bus journey to Ernakulum and rest of the film talks about how these strangers influence each other.

Most of the critics have appreciated the efforts of the makers to bring out a good entertainer. The film has reportedly excelled in the technical aspects as well as in the performance of actors. Most of the critics feel that the script of the film is weak, but the director has managed to cover this with some cinematic excellence.

Meanwhile, the film has gained positive response from the audience. It looks like, "Lal Bahadhur And Shasthri" is yet another small film, which is going to strike gold at Malayalam cinema box office.

"Jayasurya plays the good-hearted Lal convincingly and shines with his mannerisms and comic timings. Bahadhur is safe in Nedumudi Venu's hands. Aju Varghese's portrayal of Shasthri doesn't have anything new to offer and shows uncannible resemblance with the actor's previous characters. Mala Aarvindan and Kavitha Nair did complete justice to their roles. Sandra Simon, who played the female lead has nothing much to do in the movie; but fails to establish an effective onscreen chemistry with lead actor Jayasurya. Naaigal Jaakirathai (English: Beware of Dogs ) is an Tamil comedy-thriller film, written and directed by Shakti Soundar Rajan featuring a dog in the lead. The film, which also stars Sibiraj and Arundhati in lead roles. The movie is produced by his father Sathyaraj under the banner Nathambal Film Factory, which had earlier produced Lee.

After Naanayam, Sibiraj was on the lookout for a script for his next film. Since nothing interesting turned up, he took a brief hiatus, still reading scripts. Sibiraj is a dog-lover and has 3 dogs. So, he expressed his eagerness in working with animals in a film.

Director Shakti S. Rajan, who had earlier directed Sibiraj in Naanayam, came up with a script with a dog in the lead. The film is about a military-trained dog and a man, and their journey. Finally, the film was announced in July 2013. The film was titled Naaigal Jaakirathai meaning 'Beware of Dogs'.
Sibiraj plays the second hero and will be sharing screen space with a military trained canine. Apart from playing the hero, the dog would also do several action sequences and comedy tracks in the film. Arundhati of Sundaattam fame plays the female lead. While music is composed by Dharan Kumar of Podaa Podi fame, camera is handled by Nizar Shifi and editing by the Praveen K L.

Story: 

Naaigal Jaakirathai story revolves around a Belgian Shepherd dog named Subramani (Idoh). Idoh is the film’s central attraction. One day Subramani (Idoh) is transported to Coimbatore from an army camp in Kashmir. A military officer gives shelter to Idoh in his home. Sibiraj, who plays a police officer, is asked to look after the dog for few days since the military officer travels outstation.

Sibiraj gets impressed when the training officers explain Idoh’s potential and how helpful it could be in identifying crime scenes. An interesting turn takes place when Sibiraj’s wife played by Arundhati gets kidnapped and Sibiraj has to find her within time period to save her life. How Sibiraj finds her wife with the help of Idoh forms the rest of the story.

Performance:

Sibiraj gave his best performance in this film. The dog (Idoh) and Sibiraj has equally challenging parts in this film. Arundhati looks beautiful. Remaining cast of the film is good in their respective roles.

Plus Points:

The relationship between Sibiraj and Idoh looks naturally on screen before an interesting turn of events. Background score is good.

Minus Points:

The story becomes predictable in the second half and the human part of the story lacks in the second half.

Analysis:

Director Shakti Soundar Rajan did a good job and he depicted a good relationship between a man and his dog realistically. First half of the film is nicely made. Second half moves at a good pace compared to the first half.

Verdict:

Must watch Naaigal Jaakirathai… Thumbs up to director Shakti Soundar Rajan! For making a movie on the relationship between man and dog.

Vanmam Preview:

Newcomer Jai Krishna’s Vanmam, starring Vijay Sethupathi and Kreshna will be hitting the screens this Friday (November 21st). According to trade pundits, this movie will be Vijay Sethupathi’s biggest release so far and Kreshna is also hoping to make a comeback after the debacle of Vanavarayan Vallavarayan.

Sunaina plays the leading lady in the film and she is paired up opposite Kreshna in the film. Music for the film is scored by Thaman, while camera is handled by Bala Bharani. Editing is taken care by Suresh Urs. The movie is produced by Nemichand Jhabak and Hitesh Jhabak, who will also distribute the movie.

Will Kamal Haasan’s assistant Jai Krishna impress us with his first film? Watch this space for the review on Friday!

Vanmam Review:

Vijay Sethupathy is all set to feature in one more multi starrer as he will be sharing the screen with Kreshna this time. ‘Vanmam’ is all about friendship and details about the importance of not letting too many ‘words’ while arguing. Albeit, Vijay Sethupathy been busy with more than half a dozen movies, his last release came in the month of February. Kreshna, who had a mixed year with the release of ‘Yaamirukka Bayamey’ and ‘Vaanavarayan Vallavarayan’ is looking ahead to end the year on a high.

‘Vanmam’ boasts, Vijay Sethupathu, Kreshna, Sunaina, Anjali Rao, Sri Ranjani, Bose Venkat, and many more to its cast. Thaman has scored the music while Suresh Urs has done the editing. Nemichand Jhabak and Hitesh Jhabak have produced this action drama and Jai Krishna, who worked under Kamalhassan and STR is making his way as a director for the first time.

Vanmam is directed by Jai Krishna and the BGM, musics and soundtrack is composed by S Thaman and screenplay is handled by director himself. Editing and Cinematography had given to Suresh and Bala Bharani respectively. the movie is produced by Nemichand Jhabak, and V. Hitesh Jhabak under the production banner Nemichand Jhabak Productions.

Base Plot :

 The story moves between the two friends – Radha and Chelladurai, casted by Vijay Sethupathi and Kreshna. They are to e the best buddies in the village, and later due to some ego problem among them they got clashed and finally they mush be together at the end of the movie.

Story :

Vanmam movie focuses on two friends Krishna and Vijay who breaks up their friendship for a reason and how they come back together.Vanmam movie packed with Romance, Friendship and emotions which are very common.

Krishna and Vijay who will be living careless and irresponsibly at home. Krishna falls love with Sunaina. She will be sister of Rathnam who is very popular in the city. Ratnam will have a rivalry with Jaypee and they keep clashing each other. One day Krishna and Rathnam will have clash which leads to breakup of Sunaina and Krishna. After this Vijay enters and unintentionally stabs Rathnam which leads to death. With this incident Vijay and Krishna breaks up their friendship.

Vijay realizes his guilty and keeps saving Rathnam family. On the other side Krishna would waiting for his love and has clash with Jaypee too. Jaypee plays drama with Vijay and krishna as usual and at the end of the movie everyone realizes what is what for happy ending of friendship.
