Box Office Collection: Rajinikanth's 'Lingaa' Beats Aamir Khan's 'PK' in Malaysia

Aamir Khan's "PK" has failed to beat Rajinikanth's "Lingaa" box office first weekend records in Malaysia

Aamir Khan starrer "PK", which is heading towards earning ₹150 crores at collection centres, may have dominated box office worldwide but there is one region that the Bollywood movie could not overpower Tamil movie 'Lingaa'. Well, it is none other than Malaysia.

The Bollywood movie in its first weekend has only earned ₹8.04 lakhs (44,333 MYR). People were curious to see whether "PK" could dominate the Malaysian box office. But the movie could not beat "Lingaa", which made ₹2.26 crore in its first weekend. By the end of its second week, it has earned ₹3.55 crore.

The Bollywood movies does not have a big market in Malaysia and Kollywood movies enjoy good audience due to the Tamil population residing in this part of the world. But Shah Rukh Khan's earlier movie "Happy New Year" was an exception as it had fared well here and managed to make more than ₹1.50 crore here.

However, traders firmly believe that the performance of Aamir Khan starrer would not improve in Malaysia and "Lingaa" is mostly likely to remain in top position. On the other end, the Tamil movie's performance in other parts of the world has slowed down due to negative reviews. But it is doing decent business in Tamil Nadu.

Meanwhile, "PK" has got a flying start at various other international circuits. The Bollywood film has been released in over 600 screens. It's performance is exceptionally good in North America, Australia and the UK.

"PK" has made ₹47.6 crore from the overseas market in its first weekend. The total worldwide gross stands at ₹124 crore and the movie is likely to break several records in the coming days.

The movie has Aamir Khan and Anushka Shetty playing the lead roles. It is produced and directed Raju Hirani.

'Lingaa' Box Office: Places Where Rajinikanth Starrer Failed to Beat Vijay's 'Kaththi'

While "Lingaa" has beaten "Kaththi" at the box office in several Indian circuits, there are many regions overseas where it could not pip Vijay's movie.

Tamil movies have a limited market overseas but good viewership. The key circuits are the US, the UK and Malaysia. While "Lingaa" has made a record-breaking business in the US and managed to beat "Kaththi's record, the flick could not outshine Vijay's movie in the UK, Malaysia and Australia.

In the UK, "Kaththi" was opened in 56 screens and got fantastic reception from the audience. In its first weekend, it earned ₹2.19 crore and by the end of the second weekend in had raked in ₹3.13 crore. In comparison, "Lingaa" was released in 36 screens and minted ₹1.68 crore in the first weekend.

The collection was not encouraging in the second weekend for "Lingaa," where it just about managed to cross the ₹2-crore mark in the UK and lost to "Kaththi." 

The other exciting circuit for "Kaththi" was Malaysia where its record has not been broken by "Lingaa". Here, Vijay's movie grossed in ₹3.30 crore in the first weekend and ended the second weekend with ₹3.74 crore. On the other hand, "Lingaa" earned ₹2.26 crore in its first weekend and ₹3.55 crore by the end of the second weekend. 

However, "Lingaa" has not able to beat Vijay's "Kaththi" and lost by a narrow margin.

In the Australian box office, "Kaththi" was opened in 10 screens and earned ₹86.81 lakh in its first weekend. By the end of the second weekend, it had earned  ₹1.01 crore.

"Lingaa" has failed to beat this record as it has grossed only ₹78.47 lakh till date.

Meanwhile, the Rajinikanth and Sonakshi Sinha starrer "Lingaa" has crossed the ₹100-crore mark to become the second Tamil movie of the year after "Kaththi" to achieve the feat.

'Mukunda' Box Office Collection: Will Varun Tej Starrer Strike Gold?

Varun Tej's debut film "Mukunda" is all set to hit screens on 24 December. Directed by Srikanth Addala, "Mukunda" is touted to be an action family entertainer with Pooja Hegde playing the female lead.

The film has Prakash Raj, Brahmanandam and Rao Ramesh in supporting roles. Its music is composed by Mickey J Meyer, while cinematography is handled by Manikandan. Tagore Madu and Nallamalapu Srinivas have produced the film under Leo Productions banner.

"Mukunda" will reportedly have the biggest release for a debutant in the overseas markets. Overseas distribution studio CineGalaxy, Inc in association with Asian Cinemas will be releasing the film in 75 theatres across the United States. The film's premiere shows will be held on 23 December in the US.

Advance booking for "Mukunda" looks promising and the film is likely to take good openings considering the positive pre-release buzz surrounding the film. Director Addala's last release "Seethamma Vakitlo Sirimalle Chettu" (SVSC) which hit the screens in 2013, was a huge hit at the box office.

Following the success of "SVSC," there are big expectations on Addala's next release "Mukunda." The first look teaser, songs and the trailer of "Mukunda" have generated decent hype about the Varun Tej starrer. The Christmas holidays is expected to ensure that the film has a good opening weekend. However, its overall performance will depend on the reviews given by the critics and the audience. If "Mukunda" manages to get positive reviews, it is likely to fare well at the box office.

However, the Varun Tej starrer will not enjoy a solo run at the box office. The film will be clashing with Nithiin's "Chinnadana Nee Kosam" (CNM) which is releasing on Christmas Day. "CNM" is expected to release in more number of screens than "Mukunda." "#Mukunda & #CNK more or less Equal Centres Release. But #CNK will have More no. of Screens. #Mukunda team going with limited screens," stated Andhraboxoffice.

It will be interesting to see if "Mukunda" manages to perform well despite clash with the Nithiin-starrer and strike gold at the box office.

'PK' (Peekay) Fourth Day Box Office Collection: Aamir Starrer Surpasses ₹100 Crore Mark; Beats Salman's 'Jai Ho'

The box office collection of Aamir Khan's "PK" (Peekay) surpassed the ₹100 crore mark, but it took four days for the film to achieve the feat. 

"PK", helmed by Rajkumar Hirani, has become the ninth film to earn ₹100 crore in 2014. Aamir's film earned ₹95 crore in its opening weekend and more than ₹21.22 crore on Monday, taking its domestic total to ₹116.43 crore.

Here is the four day breakup of the film according to Bollywood Hungama: Friday ₹26.63 crore, Saturday ₹30.34 crore, Sunday ₹38.24 crore and Monday ₹21.22 crore.

Despite being a working day, the film performed exceptionally well on Monday. Compared to opening day, the film registered a minimal drop on Monday.

With its four-day total, "PK" has managed to beat the lifetime record of four films released this year.

Salman Khan's "Jai Ho" earned ₹116 crore, Akshay Kumar's "Holiday - A Soldier Is Never Off Duty" minted ₹112.45 crore, Sidharth Malhotra's "Ek Villain" raked in ₹105.62 crore and Arjun Kapoor's "2 States" earned ₹102.13 crore.

"PK" broke the record of all the above mentioned films within four days. It is now the fourth highest grosser film of 2014 after "Kick", "Happy New Year" and "Bang Bang".

Meanwhile, Hirani's film, which is also the 200th release of this year, is the 35th Bollywood film that has entered the century club. Interestingly, Aamir's "Ghajini" released on 24 December 2008, was the first film to make ₹100 crore business from its theatrical run in India.

And its Aamir's film "Dhoom 3" that holds the record of fastest ₹100 crore earner film. "Dhoom 3" and "Happy New Year" are the only two films that earned ₹100 crore in three days.

While "PK" took four days to enter the elite club, it has joined the list "Krrish 3" and "Chennai Express".

"PK", directed by Hirani, also features Anushka Sharma, Sushant Singh Rajput and Boman Irani in pivotal roles.

Aamir Khan and Rajkumar Hirani's much-talked about film "PK" has opened to superb response and amassed fantastic figures at the box office in the first weekend, but it has failed to beat records of hit films such as "Dhoom 3", "Happy New Year", "Singham Returns" and "Bang Bang"

Released in around 5000 screens in the domestic market, "PK" collected ₹26.63 crore on Friday. The movie showed decent growth and raked in ₹30.34 crore on Saturday and ₹38.24 crore on Sunday. It has collected total of ₹95.21 crore at the Indian box office in the first weekend.

"PK", which graced over 600 cinema halls in the international markets, has collected ₹47.6 crore ($7.68 million) at the overseas box office in its opening weekend. Its three-day worldwide total stands at ₹142.81 crore. Despite having superb numbers, the film has failed to set any new record at the box office.

Here are the 15 collection records PK failed to beat in its opening records.

Aamir Khan's last outing "Dhoom 3" holds six records in its opening weekend. With its first day collection of ₹36 crore, the film was the biggest opener for Aamir, and the biggest opener during Christmas season. Having collected ₹107+ crore in three days, it was Aamir's fastest ₹100 crore grosser and highest grosser in the opening weekend.

Dhoom 3 collected ₹62.95 crores ($10.17 million) at the overseas Box Office in the first weekend. It became the biggest opener as well all time highest grosser in the international market in the opening weekend. With its three-day worldwide collection ₹170+ crore, it is the highest grosser in the global market in the opening weekend

Shah Rukh Khan's Happy New Year collected ₹44+ crores on the first day and ₹108.86 crore in the first weekend in the domestic box office. It became the biggest opener of 2014, biggest opener on non-holiday release, biggest opener of all time and highest grosser in the opening weekend in 2014 as well as all time.

Ajay Devgn's "Singham Returns" and Hrithik Roshan's "Bang Bang" collected Happy New Year ₹32 crore and ₹27.54 crore respectively at the Indian box office on the first day of their release. They have landed in the second and third place in the list of 10 biggest openers of 2014, while "PK" graced the fourth spot.

"PK" has had good amount of hype, promotion, positive word and better volume of release than "Dhoom 3," "Happy New Year", "Singham Returns" and "Bang Bang". Before its release,  trade analysts in B-Town had predicted that the film would erase all the old records and set its own brand new benchmarks, but it has failed to beat many old records.

'Lingaa' 10-Day Collection at Box Office: Rajini-Starrer Grosses ₹130 crore Worldwide

Rajinikanth-Sonakshi Sinha's "Lingaa" has minted around ₹130 crore in 10 days at the worldwide box office.

A major chunk of the collections has come from Tamil Nadu where the film has grossed ₹54.9 crore. The overseas markets including the US, the UK, Australia and New Zealand have contributed around ₹34 crore. With the inclusion of collections from AP/N, Karnataka, Kerala and Rest of India, "Lingaa" has raked in approximately ₹129.6 crore at the worldwide box office, reported Andhraboxoffice.

Tamil Nadu – ₹54.9 crore

AP/N- ₹23 crore

Kerala- ₹4.7 crore

Karnataka – ₹10 crore

Rest of India – ₹3 crore

US, Australia, New Zealand and the UK – ₹13 crore

Rest of Overseas (estimates) – ₹21 crore

Ten days worldwide total- ₹129.6 crore

"Lingaa" has become the latest entrant to the ₹100-crore club after Vijay's "Kaththi." The Rajinikanth-starrer is yet to surpass "Kaththi" total collections from Tamil Nadu which is ₹66.9 crore. It needs to be seen if the action drama can beat "Kaththi" collections and emerge as the highest grossing Tamil film of 2014 in the state.

Interestingly, "Lingaa" (including Tamil and Telugu versions) has surpassed "Kaththi" (Tamil) worldwide collections that stood at approximately ₹124.5 crore.

The Rajinikanth-starrer took grand openings in the first weekend, but its collections dropped later as a result of mixed reviews. Although "Lingaa" is dominating the screens in Tamil Nadu, the film's collections have not been as high as expected.

Recently, a section of the media had reported that distributors of "Lingaa" have suffered huge losses as the film failed to fare well at the box office. However, the Tamil Nadu distributors of the film – Vendhar Movies – have stated that the film's performance will improve during Christmas holidays and it will emerge as a profitable venture for all distributors.

One needs to wait and watch for at least a couple of weeks to know the box office status of "Lingaa." As of now, the film's performance is being considered as average and it remains to be seen if it will be elevated to "hit" status.

'PK' Overseas Box Office Collection: Aamir's Film Beats Shah Rukh's 'Happy New Year' Opening Weekend Total

Aamir Khan's "PK" (Peekay) might have scored less at the domestic box office, but in the international market it has gotten a very good response.

The film has shattered the opening weekend record of this year's blockbuster movies "Happy New Year" and "Kick" with big margin. The second day collection of the film at overseas box office was better than opening day.

In international market, where "PK" was released in over 600 screens, it registered a jump of around 40 percent in all circuits.

"PK" also broke the record of Aamir's last film in North America. In its opening weekend, Aamir starrer minted approximately ₹30 crore from overseas box office, accoring to Bollywood Hungama. 

It had the highest opening day collection from North America (US-Canada) box office, beating "Happy New Year" and "Dhoom 3" record. Furthermore, the film witnessed approximately 40% jump in its business on second day at North America box office.

In just two days, "PK" minted ₹15.02 crore from the US-Canada box office.

The opening weekend growth report of "PK" is same in other countries as well. From the UK-Ireland box office it minted ₹6.41 crore, beating "Happy New Year" ₹5.59 crore (£ 568,183) three day total.

At Australian and New Zealand box office also "PK" broke "Happy New Year" record. "PK" also registered itself as the second highest opening weekend grosser in Australia after "Dhoom 3".

It collected ₹3.51 crore from Australia, whereas "Happy New Year" collected ₹2.05 crore. From New Zealand market, it earned ₹83.99 lakh, while "Happy New Year" revenue stands at ₹73.02 lakh.

The opening weekend collection report of Gulf Region is not updated yet, but in its opening day "PK" minted ₹4.04 crore.

At several circuits including Australia, New Zeeland and the UK, "PK" has managed to grab the second spot with its debut weekend total.

Meanwhile, at the worldwide box office "PK" has managed to cross the ₹100 crore mark. After adding the overseas total, the worldwide collection of "PK" stands at ₹125.11 crore.
