Box Office Collection: Rajinikanth's 'Lingaa' Beats Aamir Khan's 'PK' in Malaysia

Aamir Khan's "PK" has failed to beat Rajinikanth's "Lingaa" box office first weekend records in Malaysia

Aamir Khan starrer "PK", which is heading towards earning ₹150 crores at collection centres, may have dominated box office worldwide but there is one region that the Bollywood movie could not overpower Tamil movie 'Lingaa'. Well, it is none other than Malaysia.

The Bollywood movie in its first weekend has only earned ₹8.04 lakhs (44,333 MYR). People were curious to see whether "PK" could dominate the Malaysian box office. But the movie could not beat "Lingaa", which made ₹2.26 crore in its first weekend. By the end of its second week, it has earned ₹3.55 crore.

The Bollywood movies does not have a big market in Malaysia and Kollywood movies enjoy good audience due to the Tamil population residing in this part of the world. But Shah Rukh Khan's earlier movie "Happy New Year" was an exception as it had fared well here and managed to make more than ₹1.50 crore here.

However, traders firmly believe that the performance of Aamir Khan starrer would not improve in Malaysia and "Lingaa" is mostly likely to remain in top position. On the other end, the Tamil movie's performance in other parts of the world has slowed down due to negative reviews. But it is doing decent business in Tamil Nadu.

Meanwhile, "PK" has got a flying start at various other international circuits. The Bollywood film has been released in over 600 screens. It's performance is exceptionally good in North America, Australia and the UK.

"PK" has made ₹47.6 crore from the overseas market in its first weekend. The total worldwide gross stands at ₹124 crore and the movie is likely to break several records in the coming days.

The movie has Aamir Khan and Anushka Shetty playing the lead roles. It is produced and directed Raju Hirani.

Aamir Khan's 'PK' Sequel?; Will Ranbir Kapoor Play Lead alongside Mr. Perfectionist?

Aamir Khan's latest release "PK" has been garnering overwhelming responses from the viewers since it hit theatres on 19 December.

And with the success of the film, the makers are reportedly planning to make a sequel to it.

"PK" director Rajkumar Hirani, who is currently working on the biopic based on Sanjay Dutt, is said to be in talks for the sequel. However, if the sequel comes up it will only be made after the release of Dutt's biopic, considering the ample amount of efforts the director puts in scripting his films. 

"Rajkumar Hirani is a kind of a filmmaker who gives maximum time scripting his film. Yes, talks are certainly on making a sequel to PK but, it's too early to confirm anything at the moment. Raju is currently busy with his biopic based on Sanjay Dutt and he is a kind of a director who takes his own time to finish his films. If at all a sequel to PK is made it will be made only after Sanjay Dutt's biopic film," a source told Koimoi.

Meanwhile Khan, who is elated with the positive response from the viewers, when asked if there would be a sequel to "PK" told NDTV: "Let's see. You all have to ask Raju Hirani if he is interested in making a sequel. If they make it, it's good. I would like to do it."

"PK" towards the end has Ranbir Kapoor, who gives a hint that the film may have a sequel. And speaking about the film's climax, Mr.perfectionist told the daily: "May be, Rajkumar Hirani is thinking of getting both Ranbir and me in the sequel."

"PK" also features Anushka Sharma, Sushant Singh Rajput, Saurabh Shukla, Boman Irani and Dutt in pivotal roles.

'PK' (Peekay) Fourth Day Box Office Collection: Aamir Starrer Surpasses ₹100 Crore Mark; Beats Salman's 'Jai Ho'

The box office collection of Aamir Khan's "PK" (Peekay) surpassed the ₹100 crore mark, but it took four days for the film to achieve the feat. 

"PK", helmed by Rajkumar Hirani, has become the ninth film to earn ₹100 crore in 2014. Aamir's film earned ₹95 crore in its opening weekend and more than ₹21.22 crore on Monday, taking its domestic total to ₹116.43 crore.

Here is the four day breakup of the film according to Bollywood Hungama: Friday ₹26.63 crore, Saturday ₹30.34 crore, Sunday ₹38.24 crore and Monday ₹21.22 crore.

Despite being a working day, the film performed exceptionally well on Monday. Compared to opening day, the film registered a minimal drop on Monday.

With its four-day total, "PK" has managed to beat the lifetime record of four films released this year.

Salman Khan's "Jai Ho" earned ₹116 crore, Akshay Kumar's "Holiday - A Soldier Is Never Off Duty" minted ₹112.45 crore, Sidharth Malhotra's "Ek Villain" raked in ₹105.62 crore and Arjun Kapoor's "2 States" earned ₹102.13 crore.

"PK" broke the record of all the above mentioned films within four days. It is now the fourth highest grosser film of 2014 after "Kick", "Happy New Year" and "Bang Bang".

Meanwhile, Hirani's film, which is also the 200th release of this year, is the 35th Bollywood film that has entered the century club. Interestingly, Aamir's "Ghajini" released on 24 December 2008, was the first film to make ₹100 crore business from its theatrical run in India.

And its Aamir's film "Dhoom 3" that holds the record of fastest ₹100 crore earner film. "Dhoom 3" and "Happy New Year" are the only two films that earned ₹100 crore in three days.

While "PK" took four days to enter the elite club, it has joined the list "Krrish 3" and "Chennai Express".

"PK", directed by Hirani, also features Anushka Sharma, Sushant Singh Rajput and Boman Irani in pivotal roles.

'PK' Hurts Sentiments of Hindus: #BoycottPK, #WeSupportPK Trend on Twitter, Facebook

Aamir Khan's "PK", which released in theatres on 19 December, has sparked a controversy over mocking at Hindu gods, leading to campaigns called #BoycottPK and #WeSupportPK on Twitter and Facebook.

Some scenes of "PK" have supposedly hurt the religious sentiments of many Hindus, who started a campaign called #BoycottPK on Twitter on the opening day of the film. As a counter to this campaign, some film goers started another campaign called #WeSupportPK a day after the movie hit the screens.

With #BoycottPK and #WeSupportPK trending on Twitter and Facebook, a huge debate on filmmaking in Bollywood has started on the social media for the last couple of days. Some have blasted the makers of "PK" for mocking Lord Shiva, while others have defended them.

Pro-Hindu film goers have posted over 49,536 tweets with the hashtag #BoycottPK and voiced their opinions against the controversial scene in "PK", as per the reports of Topsy, a social media analytics firm. Meanwhile another campaign has seen 33,328 tweets posted with #WeSupportPK.

Aamir Khan and Rajkumar Hirani's much-talked about film "PK" has opened to superb response and amassed fantastic figures at the box office in the first weekend, but it has failed to beat records of hit films such as "Dhoom 3", "Happy New Year", "Singham Returns" and "Bang Bang"

Released in around 5000 screens in the domestic market, "PK" collected ₹26.63 crore on Friday. The movie showed decent growth and raked in ₹30.34 crore on Saturday and ₹38.24 crore on Sunday. It has collected total of ₹95.21 crore at the Indian box office in the first weekend.

"PK", which graced over 600 cinema halls in the international markets, has collected ₹47.6 crore ($7.68 million) at the overseas box office in its opening weekend. Its three-day worldwide total stands at ₹142.81 crore. Despite having superb numbers, the film has failed to set any new record at the box office.

Here are the 15 collection records PK failed to beat in its opening records.

Aamir Khan's last outing "Dhoom 3" holds six records in its opening weekend. With its first day collection of ₹36 crore, the film was the biggest opener for Aamir, and the biggest opener during Christmas season. Having collected ₹107+ crore in three days, it was Aamir's fastest ₹100 crore grosser and highest grosser in the opening weekend.

Dhoom 3 collected ₹62.95 crores ($10.17 million) at the overseas Box Office in the first weekend. It became the biggest opener as well all time highest grosser in the international market in the opening weekend. With its three-day worldwide collection ₹170+ crore, it is the highest grosser in the global market in the opening weekend

Shah Rukh Khan's Happy New Year collected ₹44+ crores on the first day and ₹108.86 crore in the first weekend in the domestic box office. It became the biggest opener of 2014, biggest opener on non-holiday release, biggest opener of all time and highest grosser in the opening weekend in 2014 as well as all time.

Ajay Devgn's "Singham Returns" and Hrithik Roshan's "Bang Bang" collected Happy New Year ₹32 crore and ₹27.54 crore respectively at the Indian box office on the first day of their release. They have landed in the second and third place in the list of 10 biggest openers of 2014, while "PK" graced the fourth spot.

"PK" has had good amount of hype, promotion, positive word and better volume of release than "Dhoom 3," "Happy New Year", "Singham Returns" and "Bang Bang". Before its release,  trade analysts in B-Town had predicted that the film would erase all the old records and set its own brand new benchmarks, but it has failed to beat many old records.

'PK' Overseas Box Office Collection: Aamir's Film Beats Shah Rukh's 'Happy New Year' Opening Weekend Total

Aamir Khan's "PK" (Peekay) might have scored less at the domestic box office, but in the international market it has gotten a very good response.

The film has shattered the opening weekend record of this year's blockbuster movies "Happy New Year" and "Kick" with big margin. The second day collection of the film at overseas box office was better than opening day.

In international market, where "PK" was released in over 600 screens, it registered a jump of around 40 percent in all circuits.

"PK" also broke the record of Aamir's last film in North America. In its opening weekend, Aamir starrer minted approximately ₹30 crore from overseas box office, accoring to Bollywood Hungama. 

It had the highest opening day collection from North America (US-Canada) box office, beating "Happy New Year" and "Dhoom 3" record. Furthermore, the film witnessed approximately 40% jump in its business on second day at North America box office.

In just two days, "PK" minted ₹15.02 crore from the US-Canada box office.

The opening weekend growth report of "PK" is same in other countries as well. From the UK-Ireland box office it minted ₹6.41 crore, beating "Happy New Year" ₹5.59 crore (£ 568,183) three day total.

At Australian and New Zealand box office also "PK" broke "Happy New Year" record. "PK" also registered itself as the second highest opening weekend grosser in Australia after "Dhoom 3".

It collected ₹3.51 crore from Australia, whereas "Happy New Year" collected ₹2.05 crore. From New Zealand market, it earned ₹83.99 lakh, while "Happy New Year" revenue stands at ₹73.02 lakh.

The opening weekend collection report of Gulf Region is not updated yet, but in its opening day "PK" minted ₹4.04 crore.

At several circuits including Australia, New Zeeland and the UK, "PK" has managed to grab the second spot with its debut weekend total.

Meanwhile, at the worldwide box office "PK" has managed to cross the ₹100 crore mark. After adding the overseas total, the worldwide collection of "PK" stands at ₹125.11 crore.

The year 2014 will be a special year for Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan.

Professionally, 2014 has been a successful year for the three big Bollywood Khans – Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan. With their movies doing well at the box office, they are set to bid goodbye to the year on a positive note. They also had some special moments to cherish in their personal lives. 

Aamir Khan

Aamir Khan started off the year with the stupendous success of his last-year release "Dhoom 3", which was released in December 2013. Now, 'Mr. Perfectionist' of Bollywood has a blockbuster at the end of the year; his latest movie "PK" has opened to positive reviews and packed houses. The film, in all probability, is expected to set new benchmarks at collection centres, thus making 2014 a special year for the actor.

Salman Khan

The year has been a mixed bag for this actor. He began with the release of "Jai Ho", which failed to meet the audience's expectations. It became the lowest-earning movie of the actor in the recent years. However, Salman actor bounced back with "Kick" that did earth-shattering business. The film holds the record of second highest grossing movie of all time in India.

When it came to personal life, the actor stunned everybody by patching up with Shah Rukh Khan, whom he avoided for six years following a fight. And his sister Arpita Khan's marriage doubled his happiness in 2014. However, the 2002-hit-and-run case continued to haunt him.

Shah Rukh Khan's success run continued in 2014. He was seen in a cameo in "Bhoothnath Returns" and his "Happy New Year" was one of the biggest hits of 2014. The Farah Khan-directorial movie performed well but did not break his previous records at the box office. His patch-up with Salman Khan and growing friendship with Aamir Khan are some of the other positive developments for him in 2014.

Last but not the least, the three big Khans, after a long time, came together at "Aap Ki Adalat" celebrations early this month. It was a rare sight as they were not seen together for many years. It will be one of the happiest moments for the three Khans in 2014.

Box Office Collection: 'Lingaa' Dominates, 'Pisaasu' and 'PK' Take Good Openings in Chennai

Rajinikanth-starrer "Lingaa" is still dominating the Chennai box office in its second week despite new releases including "Pisaasu" and "PK."

"Lingaa" witnessed average theatre occupancy of 85% during the second weekend and the film minted ₹5.34 crore in 10 days at the Chennai box office, reported Behindwoods. Despite mixed reviews, "Lingaa" has done fantastic business in the city. But, the coming weeks will be crucial for the film and based on its performance its box office status will be determined.

With Christmas holidays nearing, "Lingaa" business is expected to pick up. However, there are a string of Tamil films including Arya's "Meaghamann," Vikram Prabhu's "Vellakara Durai," Vaibhav's "Kappal" and Prabhu Solomon's "Kayal" planned for Christmas release. The release of these films is likely to reduce the screen count for "Lingaa." One needs to wait and watch as to how the film fares in the coming days.

Pisaasu

Mysskin's "Pisaasu" has taken a good opening at the Chennai box office. The film witnessed average theatre occupancy of 85% and fetched ₹39.37 lakh in the first weekend.

"Pisaasu" has received positive reviews from the critics and the audience also seems to have liked the film. The film's business was not affected by biggies like "Lingaa" and "PK." It took off on a good note in the first weekend and is expected to continue its decent run till the end of the first week, after which it might face huge competition from Christmas releases. 

 It needs to be seen if "Pisaasu" will turn out to be a profitable venture.

PK

Aamir Khan's "PK" kicked off on a fantastic note in Chennai. Particularly, the film is doing well in multiplexes. Positive word of mouth is likely to help the film to perform well in the coming days. Aamir's "Dhoom 3" was a hit in the city and it will be interesting to see if "PK" also follows suit.

Sutrula

Newly-released film "Sutrula" has taken a poor opening at the Chennai box office. It fetched ₹2.18 lakh in the first weekend. With big releases like "Lingaa" and "PK" dominating the screens, it has been tough for "Sutrula" to grab enough number of screens and register decent collections. Poor reviews are likely to affect the film's business further and there is not much hope in terms of collections.
